To celebrate, people light bonfires, set off fireworks and send wish lanterns floating off into the night sky. Others jump over and around fires, chanting, "My yellow is yours, your red is mine," invoking the replacement of ills with warmth and energy. However, women remain sensitive about having their photographs taken who aren’t wearing Iran’s mandatory religious headscarf.

Expatriate Tax Burdens In US Get A New Focus

The tax plights of US taxpayers living abroad are gaining attention. While on the campaign trail in October 2024, President Donald Trump pledged to eliminate what he called "double taxation" on these individuals. Buoyed by Trump’s re-election, House Ways and Means Committee member Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) introduced the Residence-Based Taxation for Americans Abroad Act (H.R. 10468) two months later. LaHood, whose legislation seeks to apply residence-based taxation to US citizens living abroad, made it clear that he wants to work together with Democrats to ease those tax burdens. Republicans on the House Budget Committee are also interested. They are considering a menu of top budget options, and exempting non-resident US taxpayers from income tax happens to be one of them.

Indian Expat’s Video On Why India Is More Convenient Sparks Debate

An Indian expat residing in Sweden has sparked a widespread discussion on social media by comparing the convenience of life in India to that in Sweden. Her video highlights the swift grocery delivery services available in India, contrasting sharply with her experiences in Sweden, where it takes over 10 minutes just to reach the nearest bus stop for shopping. "India is just more convenient!" she states, pointing out that these conveniences often go unmentioned in romanticised portrayals of life abroad. "A lot of these small things are not talked about enough, so you kind of romanticise this idea of living abroad just from what you see on social media, which is very misleading," she adds. Despite her observations, she clarifies, "Don’t get me wrong, I love living in Sweden." The video has ignited a vibrant conversation about the realities of living abroad vis-a-vis the perceived conveniences back home.

The ranking of the global airlines for the first quarter of 2025 reveals regional dominance and operational trends in global aviation. As travel demand continues to grow in 2025, major airlines worldwide are expanding their networks and deploying larger and more modern aircraft to cater to millions of passengers. Unsurprisingly, North America continues to lead the industry, with the four US airlines – American Airlines (AA), Delta Air Lines (DL), United Airlines (UA), and Southwest Airlines (WN) occupying the top four spots. Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific solidifies its role as a rising aviation hub, with carriers, such as China Eastern (MU), China Southern (CZ), and IndiGo (6E), reflecting the rapid growth of air travel in the region. Latin America’s LATAM Airlines (LA) and other major players across continents further contribute to the diversity and competition of the industry.

Alternative Plan For Delayed Singapore-Mangalore Direct Flight

Despite facing disappointment, NRIs remain resolute, presenting alternative proposals to establish air connectivity between Mangalore and Singapore. This development follows Air India Express' (AIE) decision to postpone its planned direct flight service from Mangalore to Singapore. Expats in Singapore, who were excited about the first air route outside the Gulf countries, have proposed another solution for easier air connectivity between Mangalore and Singapore. According to the alternative plan, the IndiGo flight between Singapore and Bengalore that arrives at Kempegowda International Airport at 7.40am daily, should fly to Mangalore. Although there is a flight from Bengalore to Mangalore at 9am, passengers from Singapore arriving at 7.40am cannot complete procedures in time to board the 9am flight. Extending the Singapore Bengalore flight to Mangalore would benefit travellers. Rajesh H. Acharya, director of HQ Connections, Singapore, and coordinator of the Singapore Tuluver community, said, "We have been fighting for this route since 2017, and the dream was about to be realised. But it has hit a roadblock and has been delayed." AIE stopped Mangalore-Singapore flight bookings from January  4.

Google Maps or Waze: What's UAE Residents' Choice?

Navigating the roads of the UAE has become easier than ever, thanks to a variety of navigation apps. But which app do UAE residents prefer, Google Maps or Waze? Some prefer Waze over Google Maps, because it specifies which road one should be on to be able to take the exit, if needed. Google Maps just mentions to turn right in a few metres, but with Waze it will guide you with more specific instructions. While there are pros to using Waze, just like some others opined, for instance, the issue they have found so far with Waze is that information about certain places is not updated on the app yet, which makes it a little difficult. But how did people navigate before Google Maps or Waze became popular? Many used their vehicles’ inbuilt navigation system, or depended on their own knowledge of the city. Despite the growing popularity of Waze, many UAE drivers still voted for Google Maps as their app of choice.

Gulf Region Mulls Reforms To Immigration Policies

Countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are undergoing deep socio-economic reforms as they seek to transition from oil-based, rentier economies to diversified, knowledge-based development. As part of this process, these governments are looking to overhaul past labour and immigration policies, including the much-criticized "kafala" (sponsorship) system that binds millions of foreign workers to their employers. Longstanding barriers to immigrants’ integration have progressively been lifted, and new pathways to long-term stay and naturalization have begun to open. However, these reforms are selectively targeted, and the largest benefits have fallen to foreign investors and white-collar workers, leaving behind those with lower skill levels who often come from countries in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Ultimately, changes may widen the rights and inclusion gaps between highly skilled foreign nationals and other migrants.  Until recently, Gulf states did not conceive of themselves as immigration countries, and they still designate non-citizens as temporary expatriate workers (Wafidîn). This is in contrast to places, such as the European Union and North America, where immigrants are generally able to integrate into host societies and, depending on their legal status, eventually become citizens.

Social media Ban For Under-16s Targets Youth Well-being

Australia has enacted pioneering legislation prohibiting children under 16 from accessing major social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok. This makes Australia the first nation to implement such a comprehensive restriction, aiming to address concerns over the mental and physical health impacts of social media on young people. The legislation imposes stringent penalties on tech companies that fail to comply, with fines reaching up to $50 million for systemic breaches. The responsibility for enforcement rests solely with the platforms. Parents will not face penalties if violations occur. The law is slated for full implementation in 2026, following a trial period beginning in January 2025 to develop effective age verification methods. The legislation has garnered substantial public support, with polls indicating that 77% of Australians favour the ban. Media campaigns, such as News Corp’s "Let Them Be Kids," have amplified calls for action to safeguard children online.

71% of People of Indian Community Own homes in UK

The Indian community is the least likely to live in social rented housing. Instead 71% have their own homes, and they are the most socially integrated, with more friends from outside their ethnicity than any other minority group. They also come second in educational attainment, after the Chinese. The findings have come in a new report, 'A Portrait of Modern Britain,' published by Policy Exchange, which describes British Indians as 'one of the most successful ethno-religious groups in modern Britain. Also, the report found the Pakistani-Bangladeshi community to have the lowest percentage working in professions and the lowest hourly pay rate, while the Arab and Bangladeshi communities are most likely to be economically inactive. It is social class, rather than race that is considered by all ethnic groups to be the barrier to success in the UK, even though political discourse in Britain talks more about race. The report describes a new group of ethnic minorities, MINTs or 'minorities in towns' to describe those moving out of UK cities to towns and villages, where they are fully integrating with their white counterparts.

Indo-Australia Defence Pact For Air-To-Air Refueling

Australia and India have taken their defence partnership to new heights with a landmark arrangement, enabling air-to-air refuelling between the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Indian Armed Forces. The pact was announced during bilateral discussions on November 21, 2024 by Australia’s Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy and India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The agreement clears the way for RAAF’s KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft to refuel Indian Armed Forces aircraft, enhancing operational compatibility. Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Harvey Reynolds, signed the arrangement earlier in New Delhi during Australia-India Air Staff Talks. "This agreement allows us to operate seamlessly in various scenarios, fostering trust and mutual understanding," said Reynolds. It’s a tangible step forward in the defence relationship. The KC-30A’s capabilities include supporting Indian Navy P-8I Neptune surveillance aircraft, potentially extending India’s operational reach across the Indo-Pacific. Training and engagement activities between the RAAF and Indian Navy are already underway, and the refuelling capability adds a valuable layer of cooperation.

The formation of the World Trade Organisation in 1995 formalised the framework of global economic integration. Since then the scale of economic exchanges between countries has increased and given a fillip to the rise of emerging economies. India is one of the beneficiaries of globalisation. As of 2023, India’s economy reached $3.57 trillion (3.40% of the global GDP), while Canada stood at $2.14 trillion (2.03 per cent). Both are market-oriented economies well-integrated into global trade networks, with a total recorded bilateral trade of $7.55 billion in 2023. This trade includes $3.77 billion in Indian exports to Canada and $3.78 billion in imports

People in Canada are increasingly following Indian food patterns, with a large component of items imported from India or other South Asian countries. They include long-grain rice (basmati), spices, clothes, jewellery, etc. The Indian diaspora also continues to maintain close contacts with the people and places of their origin. CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) underscores the untapped trade potential, yet there are challenges to address for these opportunities to be fully realised.

Top 10 Least and Most Expensive Countries for Expats in 2024

At some point in our lives, many of us consider starting fresh in a new country. As per the United Nations, more than 232 million people relocate in search of a better life. For expats, relocating their lives and moving to a completely different city for work is not always an easy decision. Living in a new city can present significant challenges, with many factors to consider. In its 2024 Expat Survey, InterNations ranked countries in different categories. The cost of living or affordability is a crucial criterion, as it determines one’s financial situation, standard of living, and overall quality of life. About 53 countries with at least 50 respondents were included in the survey. Notably, Asia remains home to many of the best destinations in terms of affordability for expats, with one exception. Six of the top 10 countries are located in Asia: Vietnam (1st), Indonesia (3rd), the Philippines (5th), India (6th), Thailand (8th), and China (10th). They all excel across the three factors of the index.

However, breaking the trend in Asia, Singapore made it to the bottom, ranked 48, with 75% of the expats surveyed rating the cost of living negatively. Interestingly, Brazil (ranked 17th) edged out Malaysia (ranked 5th in 2023) as the 10th most affordable destination for expats, a new addition to the top 10 list, thus shifting the rank of Malaysia to 11th. India is ranked sixth in terms of affordability, while Canada took the last position, with expats citing concerns about inflation affecting food prices, rent and mortgages.
