US Tax Info For Expats

Every year, Americans overseas assume they automatically have extra time just because they don’t live in the US. That assumption quietly leads to interest charges, penalties, and missed filings — often without any warning from the IRS.

US expats often get more time to file, but rarely more time to pay. And foreign reporting rules play by their own calendar. This is what actually matters for tax year 2025, filed in 2026. Need more time? You can file Form 4868 to extend your filing deadline to October 15, 2026. This is common if: You’re waiting on foreign tax paperwork. You earn income in multiple countries. Your tax situation isn’t straightforward. For most expats, October 15 is the absolute last chance to file without penalties.

Indian Expats In UAE Face Major Changes

Indian expatriates in the UAE are set to face a series of important changes affecting travel, documentation and consular services in the coming weeks. From higher passport fees to a new service delivery system and additional pre-boarding requirements for travel to India, the updates will impact routine applications as well as travel planning.

Indian passport fees are set to rise by up to 75 per cent from July 1, marking one of the sharpest revisions in recent years, bringing major changes for millions of Indians living in the UAE.

According to a gazette notification issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on June 20, the revised charges will apply globally, including to applicants in the UAE. Indian missions in the Emirates are expected to announce the updated local fee structure soon.

US Golden Visa

In 2025, the number of applications for residency and citizenship by investment programs—also called “golden visas” or “golden passports”—from US nationals doubled, according to Henley & Partners, and it still remains elevated in 2026. “Only 7 per cent of applications by US citizens originate from Americans living outside the country, highlighting that demand is being driven overwhelmingly by US residents rather than expatriates,” says the report.

Most Americans are seeking residency and citizenship investment opportunities in Europe. Almost half of all US nationals’ applications are directed there, and Portugal and Italy are their top two options. Latin America and the Caribbean are also popular choices for Americans, with more than a quarter of applications targeting programs in those regions.

In the first half of 2026, Henley & Partners received applications from 86 nationalities for 47 investment migration programs, the firm says. “The objective is to ensure that no single government holds the whole of a family’s life and capital,” says Basil Mohr-Elzeki, managing partner and head of private clients Americas at Henley & Partners.

Sundar Pichai

 Wizard Of Silicon Valley

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google since 2015, has continually been in the limelight for his unique strategy and stellar achievements. Currently, he is leading the AI revolution in India from the front.

Sundar Pichai, an Indian–American business executive, has been the CEO of Google since 2015 and the CEO of its parent company Alphabet Inc., US, since 2019. With Google ramping up its AI ambitions to take on Microsoft and Amazon in India’s fast-growing cloud market, he has given an aggressive push into AI and cloud technologies.

Sundararajan Pichai began his corporate journey as a materials engineer. After a short tenure at  McKinsey & Co, a management consulting firm, he joined Google in 2004. He worked for the company's product management and innovation, including Google Chrome and ChromeOS. Besides, he was responsible for Google Drive. Also, he later oversaw the development of other applications such as Gmail and Google Maps.

Family And Education

Sundar Pichai was born in June 1972 in Madurai, a city in India's Tamil Nadu, to a Hindu family. His father, Regunatha Pichai, was an electrical engineer at GEC while his mother was a stenographer. Pichai grew up in a modest household in Chennai, where education and curiosity were a priority. “My mom never went past high school because of financial circumstances, but she was an avid reader,” he said. “That’s where my love of learning came from.” His grandfather’s influence and strong family values shaped his worldview: Knowledge as a path to opportunity.

Pichai studied in Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in Chennai, and he  completed the Class XII from Vana Vani school at IIT Madras. He earned a B.Tech in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He holds an MS degree from Stanford University in materials science and engineering, and also an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, US. In the University, he named Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.

In McKinsey & Company, Sundar Pichai worked as a consultant in engineering and product management at Applied Materials. On joining Google in 2004, he led the product management and innovation team for developing a suite of Google's client software products, including Google Chrome and ChromeOS. He was responsible for Google Drive also. He went on to oversee the development of other applications such as Gmail and Google Maps. In November 2009, he gave a demonstration of ChromeOS. Shortly thereafter the Chromebook was released for trial and testing in 2011. It was released officially to the public in 2012. In May 2010, he announced the open-sourcing of the new video, codec VP8, by Google, and introduced the new video format, WebM.

Between 2011 and 2014, he  served on Jive Software's board of directors. In March 2013, Sundar Pichai added Android to the list of Google products, which was formerly managed by Andy Rubin. Sundar Puchai was selected to serve as the next CEO of Google in August 2015, after previously being appointed Product Chief by CEO Larry Page. In October 2015, he stepped  into the new position on completion of the formation of Alphabet Inc., the new holding company for the Google stable.

Sundar Pichai was suggested as a contender for Microsoft's CEO in 2014, a position that was eventually given to Satya Nadella. In August 2017, he drew publicity for firing a Google employee who wrote a ten-page manifesto criticizing the company's pro-diversity policies. In 2017, he was appointed a director to the Alphabet Board of Directors. In December 2018, he was questioned by the US House Judiciary Committee on a range of Google-related issues, including possible political bias on Google's platforms, the company's alleged plans for a "censored search app" in China, and its privacy practices. In response, Sundar Pichai informed the committee that Google employees cannot influence search results. He also stated that Google users can opt out of having their data collected and also clarified that there were no existing plans for a censored search engine in China.

In December 2019, Sundar Pichai was appointed the CEO of Alphabet Inc. In April 2024, after 28 Google employees were fired for protesting against Project Nimbus, he allegedly stated that the office was not a place to fight over disruptive issues or debate politics, warning against using the company as a personal platform.

India Focus

Google is ramping up its AI ambitions to take on Microsoft and Amazon in India’s fast-growing cloud market. For Sundar Pichai, this aggressive push into AI and cloud is part of a vision he has championed for years: Making technology universally accessible while ensuring trust and safety. While talking to Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff at Dreamforce 2025 at San Francisco in October, Pichai shared how his personal journey—from waiting five years for a rotary phone in Chennai to leading one of the world’s most influential tech companies—shapes Google’s approach to AI.

Awards

Sundar Pichai was included in Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in 2016 and 2020. He was also included in the Time 100 AI list in 2024. Besides, he was awarded the 2021 Asia Game Changer Award by the Asia Society. In 2022, he received the Padma Bhushan in the category of Trade and Industry from the Government of India, the country's third-highest civilian award.

Daijiworld

Daijiworld Strikes A Chord With Expats

Gulf expats of Mangaluru in Coastal Karnataka swoon over Daijiworld, thanks to its founder Walter D'souza Nandalike who has broken the glass ceiling by his business acumen and corporate strategy. From being a news and entertainment website, Daijiworld has grown exponentially over the years into a multi-dimensional entertainment hub.

Walter D'souza Nandalike, Founder and Managing Director of Daijiworld, is an extraordinary visionary businessman. He has been wearing different hats juggling them between roles from being the company's top corporate leader and a popular actor to a prolific writer, an orator and a philanthropist.

Walter D'souza, who runs the popular Daijiworld Entertainment and News hub, as well as one of the top regional TV channels, never had an inkling of where he was headed when he set out on an uncharted business path back in the early 1990s. Today, he has offices in Mangaluru, India, Dubai, and other expat destinations. He had no plans to revolutionise the thoughts of the people of Mangaluru, but merely wished to bring about a transformation in "relationship" between natives of the coastal town employed or engaged in business in the Gulf Countries and connect them to their native heritage and culture.

The famous quote by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, "The pen is mightier than the sword," inspired Walter to set the ball rolling. A qualified journalist, he was associated with regional publications prior to landing a job in Dubai. Although he took a cue from the above quote, he did not think his business would garner such huge popularity within a short period. In fact, on the suggestions of his close friends he had set up a website for the native expats. Initially, the website was designed and operated as a source of community news from back home.

Walter D'Souza, born in 1973 and fondly known as Walter Nandalike, is the Founder and Managing Director of Daijiworld Media Pvt Ltd, a media company based in Mangaluru, Karnataka, India.

Daijiworld.com, formerly daijidubai.com, was launched in January 2001. In April 2007, the media company was converted into Daijiworld Media Pvt Ltd. With close to 1.2 million visitors per month, the website today has a wide presence, besides India, in the Middle East and Gulf countries.

Initially, Walter D'souza began writing stories and articles for Konkani and Kannada periodicals as he set out on a journalism career. In fact, it was a dream he cherished from childhood. He graduated in commerce from St Mary's College, Shirva, District Udupi. However, after a brief stint in local publications, Walter left for Dubai in search of employment. However, he had little knowledge of computers, which was then making a splash in the corporate world. Knowledge of computers had become a prerequisite for any impactful business in the media by the 1990s.

In The Beginning

It began as an April Fool's Day email prank on his friends back in 2000, which said that he had launched a website, daijidubai.com. But he was amazed by the overwhelming response he received from them. Although his friends pointed out the website was not functioning, since Walter meant it to be a mere prank. They expressed their desire that he would look into the matter forthwith. Encouraged by the enthusiasm of his friends and their support, he decided to actually start a website.

Enthused by the big initial response, Walter took necessary steps to acquire computer skills unaware that it would be a prelude to the coming revolution through his website in  Coastal Karnataka. In January 2001, his efforts came to fruition with the launch of the erstwhile daijidubai.com. It was initially meant to cater to the Konkani-speaking community. The website was transformed from a regional online publication over the years to include the entire spectrum of Mangalorean diaspora around the globe.

After the success of Daijidubai.com, Walter Nandalike subsequently set up Daijiworld.com, with much wider coverage. He soon diversified into radio and TV channels. Thereafter, he converted his proprietary firm into a private limited company by roping in like-minded friends, inviting investments in the new company. Thus, he embarked upon the corporate media business successfully.

Walter D'souza was the first person to introduce the concept of Internet TV in Mangaluru back in 2007. He launched the city's first-ever Internet television, TV Daijiworld, which has successfully been running with a wide viewership abroad. Among other programs, TV Daijiworld also telecasts major community and social events, including live webcasts from Mangaluru, Dubai, Doha, Mumbai, Bangalore and other cities across the world.

After Daijiworld's success, Walter D'souza launched the Daijiworld 24x7 TV channel. Today, the TV channel is the numero uno among other local TV channels in coastal Karnataka. In fact, it is the first multilingual channel of Karnataka serving Kannada, Tulu, Beary, and Konkani communities. Along with the multilingual TV channel, he also launched, Daijiworld Audio Visual Pvt Ltd, another first state-of-art-audio recording studio in the region, with advanced recording facilities for music and movie dubbing. Moreover, in May 2017, an app-based Konkani-Tulu music radio station was launched.

Walter, The Actor

Walter made his film debut in Coastalwood's  "Soda Sharbath," which was a box-office success. He has also played the lead role in "Mog Mullyaar," a Konkani musical film. Besides, he has appeared in "Magane Mahisa," which was directed by Veerendra Shetty, and Police File, a Kannada web series directed by Sooraj Bolar.

Walter's runaway success is Private Challenge on Daijiworld TV, a satire, along with comedian film actor Arvind Bolar. Currently, in its fourth season, Private Challenge has garnered huge viewership.

Radio Daijiworld, a subsidiary of its parent company Daijiworld Media Network, caters to all kinds of Konkani and Tulu music. Moreover, it also promotes artists and events related to Konkani. It's the first online radio station for Konkani and Tulu music.

Awards And Recognitions

Walter D'souza has bagged over 85 national, international and regional awards for his achievements. The key awards include Pingara Rajyotsava Award 2007, IPP Star of Year-2009 from Toastmasters Club, Houston, US, Rachana Entrepreneur of the Year 2010, Sandesha Media Education Award 2010, Editors' Award 2011, Young Entrepreneur Award from CCC Mumbai, Entrepreneur of the Year Award from FKCA Bengaluru, Mayura Award 2012 and several others.

A prolific writer, Walter Nandalike has written nearly 100 short-stories, several articles on current affairs and two novels 'Saithanachya Savlenth' and 'Devcharachi Deswat'. His stories have been broadcast on All India Radio. Being an actor and an orator, he has hosted over 100 major cultural events in India and the Gulf countries.

Lakshmi Mittal, ArcelorMittal

Man of Mettle

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, who is at the helm of ArcelorMittal, the world's second-largest steel producer, is widely considered synonymous with the global steel industry. His legacy goes beyond his accomplishments in the steel industry through the LNM Foundation

The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) in its October 2024 report of the short range outlook (SRO) for FY24 forecast that the global steel demand would dip further by 0.9% to 1751 million tonnes. However, after three years of decline, WorldSteel is expecting a broadbased recovery globally, except China, in 2025. Demand for steel is forecast to rebound by 1.2% in 2025 to reach 1772 million tonnes globally.

According to Dr. Martin Theuringer, Managing Director, German Steel Association and Chairman of the WorldSteel Economics Committee, observed: "The year 2024 was a difficult period for global steel demand, as the global manufacturing sector continued to grapple with persistent headwinds, including decreasing household purchasing power, aggressive monetary tightening and escalating geopolitical uncertainties."

Despite the challenges, such as lingering effects of monetary tightening, higher costs, limited affordability and geopolitical uncertainties, WorldSteel is optimistic that global steel demand would enter a moderate growth phase in 2025. The global market for steel was estimated at 1.8 billion metric tonnes in 2024. It is projected to reach 2.2 billion metric tonnes by 2030, clocking a CAGR of 2.9% from 2024 to 2030.

However, women remain sensitive about having their photographs taken who aren’t wearing Iran’s mandatory religious headscarf.

Expatriate Tax Burdens In US Get A New Focus

The tax plights of US taxpayers living abroad are gaining attention. While on the campaign trail in October 2024, President Donald Trump pledged to eliminate what he called "double taxation" on these individuals. Buoyed by Trump’s re-election, House Ways and Means Committee member Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) introduced the Residence-Based Taxation for Americans Abroad Act (H.R. 10468) two months later. LaHood, whose legislation seeks to apply residence-based taxation to US citizens living abroad, made it clear that he wants to work together with Democrats to ease those tax burdens. Republicans on the House Budget Committee are also interested. They are considering a menu of top budget options, and exempting non-resident US taxpayers from income tax happens to be one of them.

India Among Top Five Countries With Highest Visa Fees

If you are considering international travel, take note that Australia has emerged as the country with the highest visa fees, according to a study by expat insurance portal, William Russell, with India ranking fifth. Australia, known as ‘The Great Southern Land’, leads the list, closely followed by global heavyweights, such as the US, the UK, and Japan, securing the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. Key factors, such as expat population, visa data, required vaccines and language proficiency tests were analysed by William Russell to identify countries with the most challenging immigration processes. India, with its low expat population (0.4 per cent), is deemed one of the most difficult countries to immigrate to, with an Employment visa cost of GBP 427 (INR 45,412).

Exotic Foods

Italian Pizza

Italian Pizza or Pizza is one the most popular foods in the world. It is sold at a variety of restaurants, including pizzerias, restaurants, via delivery and as street food. In Italy, Pizza served in a restaurant is presented unsliced, which is eaten with a knife and fork. However, it is typically cut into slices to be eaten while held in the hand. It is also sold in grocery stores in a variety of forms, including frozen or as kits, which are then cooked using a home oven.

The term Pizza was first recorded in AD 997 in a Latin manuscript from the southern Italian town of Gaeta, Lazio. Often, Raffaele Esposito is credited for creating the modern Pizza in Naples. In 2009, Neapolitan Pizza was registered with the EU as a traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG) dish. In 2017, the art of making Neapolitan Pizza was included on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.

Indian Uttappa

Uttappa or Uttappam is a type of Dosa from South India. Unlike a typical crisp and crepe-like Dosa, a Uttapam is thicker, with toppings. The term Uttappa is derived from  Tamil words 'appam' and 'utthia,' which means 'poured appam,' since appam is cooked in a round-bottom pan while utthia-appam is cooked on a flat skillet. Although it is similar to a Dosa, it has more vegetables and takes a longer time to prepare. It is popular in South India, mainly in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. However, the delicacy is available in all South Indian restaurants across India and also abroad.

Ancient Tamil literature mentions Uttappa by name. The classic breakfast of Tamil residents consists of Idli, Dosas or Uttappams, which are mostly accompanied by Sambar and Chutney.

David And Simon Reuben

Midas Touch

After immigrating to the UK from India in the 1950s, David and Simon Reuben went from strength to strength, thanks to their business acumen and strategy. Today, the Reubens are the fourth wealthiest in Britain.

According to Britain Tracker's industry report, prepared in conjunction with the Confederation of Indian Industry, of the fastest-growing Indian companies in the UK last year, 100 of them have clocked revenue growth of at least 10%. The combined turnover of these companies is estimated at £42.8 billion, aggregating an average annual growth rate of 48%. Together, they paid £473.6 million in corporation tax and made capital expenditure investments of £1.4 billion.

Of the 100 fastest-growing Indian companies, 27% are in technology and telecoms, while engineering and manufacturing companies represent 20% of companies. Hospitality and leisure companies particularly benefitted from a full year’s trading under normal conditions. They represented 10% of the Tracker companies, including five in the top 30 list. Around 52% of the fastest-growing companies are mostly focused in London.

Reuben Brothers

Born into a Baghdadi Jewish family in Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay), David Reuben and Simon Reuben are the sons of David Sassoon Reuben and Nancy Reuben. Their father migrated to Mumbai from Iraq in search of employment in the then large textile industry. However, the divorce of their parents led the brothers to a different destination, London, in the 1950s along with their mother.

Due to financial circumstances, the brothers had a chequered early life and had to study in state schools. Simon Reuben could not complete his formal education, since he dropped out of school. They were brought up in Islington, North London.

Scrap Metals Business And Carpet Trading

Eventually, David set up a scrap metals business while Simon started out in carpets trade. He acquired England's oldest carpet company from the receivers, and subsequently he made a profit from carpet trading. Thereafter, he began investing in property. Initially, he invested in Walton Street and the King's Road in Chelsea. The brothers grew financially strong during the 1970s and 1980s, thanks to their successful metals and property businesses.

In the early 1990s, David and Simon were drawn towards the Russian metals market. However, the incapacitated Russian aluminum smelters soon became debt ridden. Trans-World, Reuben's firm, invested in the factories. They received raw materials in return for finished aluminum from them. The company's investment in Russia was estimated at $1.5 billion, with global sales in 1995 clocking over $8 billion. However, Trans-World was accused of involvement in illegal activities. The brothers were reportedly involved with a few members of the country's oligarchy. Eventually, they agreed to a multimillion-pound legal dispute with an oligarchy. And the settlement was awarded to Reuben Brothers.

By 2000, the brothers sold all Russian assets and focused their business activities particularly on the UK's property market. Since then they have made many acquisitions and investments in technology companies. By the mid-2000s their business interests in the UK and outside the country were primarily focused on real estate. Simon Reuben has investments in OneDome, a fintech business, in the UK. In 2008, the brothers once again focused on the commodity business. They expanded their mining footprint to Morocco, Indonesia and South Africa.

Realty Business And Investments

The Reuben brothers own a number of properties in the UK. Their primary properties include Millbank Tower; the John Lewis Partnership headquarters and American Express offices in Victoria; Carlton House SW1; Academy House on Sackville Street; Connaught House on Berkeley Square; and Market Towers. Besides, they also own London Primark store on Oxford Street; Sloane Street shops; and Cambridge House, the former premises of the Naval and Military Club.

The brothers' other investments and developments are in Merchant Squaren (a 1.8 million sq. ft. complex comprising offices and flats in Paddington), London; Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts (a 50-50 joint venture in a new apart-hotel under the 'art'otel' brand in Hoxton) in London; Hampton House; and airports at London Oxford and London Heliport. In 2006, they tied up with the FTSE-listed McCarthy & Stone, a retirement home construction company, though they reportedly exited from the deal subsequently.

In 2007, the brothers made investments in the luxury leisure group, Belmond Ltd. But they sold their stake in the group in 2019 for £233 million. Their other holdings are Travelodge Hotels; D2 Jeans and Blue Inc.,  Sir Stuart Rose; Luup and Metro Bank; The Wellington Pub Company (the largest free-of-tie pub estate in the UK, with about 850 tenanted pubs); Global Switch, the carrier data centre provider in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region; and a joint venture with British Marine.

In 2020, the ownership of Newcastle United Football Club was agreed between Mike Ashley and a consortium comprising Reuben Brothers, Amanda Staveley's PCP Capital Partners, and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Besides, the brothers also have a stake in Arena Racing Company (ARC Racing and Leisure Group) created in 2012 by the merger of Arena Leisure and Northern Racing. In 2024, the brothers acquired a strategic stake in EDGLRD, an entertainment company founded by film-maker Harmony Korine.

Awards And Achievements

The Reuben brothers have received many awards and accolades for their successful business. Some of prominent awards include Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2003; Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Westminster in 2005; Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish Leadership Council in 2007; and Philanthropist of the Year Award from The Sunday Times in 2012.

As per the Sunday Times Rich List 2023, David and Simon Reuben and their combined family had an estimated net worth of £24.4 billion, making them Britain's fourth wealthiest family.

Prabhakar Sharan

Costa Rica's Indian Star

Prabhakar Sharan's success story of achieving stardom will inspire many ambitious youth. He gave one of the biggest hits in 2017. He has been involved in promoting Bollywood films in Costa Rica and the rest of Latin America.

Spanish conquistadors who first explored Costa Rica in the early-1500s aptly named the land "The Rich Coast." It is richly endowed with natural beauty, with lush sprawling rain forests, beautiful flora and fauna, cascading waterfalls and enchanting landscapes. It's also a place of misty mountains, rumbling volcanoes and pristine beaches. Thanks to its bio-diversity, eco-tourists are flocking to the land from all corners of the world attracted by its guided animal tours.

Most of the Costa Rican cinemas show Hollywood productions, but in recent years the number of movies produced in this Latin American country has increased in recent years. These range from horror and comedy movies, focused on entertainment value to art cinema. The country's art movies are often character studies, focusing on aesthetics and narrative and less on political issues. Costa Rica's top successful directors in the international art movies circuit include Paz Fábrega and Isthar Yasin Gutierrez.

Costa Rica's National Film Council started submitting entries for the Oscars since 2005. A new National Cinematheque building is being constructed in San Jose to support screenings and educational programs.

Perhaps, the first Indian who has achieved extraordinary success in Latin America's entertainment industry, Prabhakar Sharan wanted to become an actor in Bollywood, but landed in Costa Rica while wanting to migrate to the US back in the 2000s. Hailing from Bihar, India, Prabhakar Sharan's success story of achieving stardom will inspire many ambitious youth. He is a well-known star in Costa Rica, who gave the local film industry one of the biggest hits of 2017, "Enredados: la confusion" (Entangled: The Confusion). It is  the first Latin American film made in typical Bollywood style, with songs and dance. It was picturized in the magnificent Costa Rica, besides Panama and Mumbai. Prabhakar played the lead role opposite Nancy Dobles, a popular Costa Rican television hostess. The movie, a box-office success, was distributed by Cinepolis in Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and San Salvador. The movie was an attempt at creating a bond between Indian and Costs Rican communities.

Indian Roots

Born in Bihar's Motihari, Prabhakar Sharan initially went to Costa Rica for studies and to pursue an acting career. His parents Prabhunath Sharan and Subhadra Prasad are retired bankers from Motihari, Bihar. He was born in Patna and did his schooling from Bhurkunda and Ramnagar, which are now in Jharkhand. He went to Rohtak for his college education. He later moved to Costa Rica for further studies. After moving to the country, he gradually opened a chain of Indian clothing stores and restaurants in 2010. He studied at Costa Rica's Universidad Panamericana in 2000. During his tenure in the university, he became the president of the university.

Six years later, Prabhakar Sharan decided to bring Bollywood movies to theatres in Costa Rica. Subsequently, he started movie distribution, production and a chain of different businesses. He was the first to bring Bollywood movies commercially to Central America. While he lived in Costa Rica, he married a local woman. However, things didn't work for him professionally and personally. He moved back to India and even divorced his wife. In 2014, he decided to move back to Costa Rica once again and make a movie. Teresa Rodriguez Cerdas, a university owner, educationist and philanthropist, helped him to achieve his ambition of producing a movie.

Bringing Bollywood To Latin America

Indian actor, producer and screenwriter Prabhakar Sharan, who is the owner of the Pacific Investment Corporation (PIC), observed:  "There is no other person or other production company that does the work I have been doing...I have worked with Panama and Costa Rica to bring Bollywood, the world’s largest film industry, to the region." Also, he signed an agreement with a major production company in India, with the backing of the Panama Film Commission of the Ministry of Commerce, to make the first Bollywood film in this country.

Prabhakar Sharan has plans to produce further movies in Panama with Bollywood producers on Costa Rica's indigenous communities, such as Ngäbe chieftain, Urracá, from the central province of Veraguas, who fought against the Spanish conquistadors. Latin America-based top Indian diplomats have praised Prabhakar for his efforts in promoting Indian films.

Currently, Prabhakar Sharan is further exploring the possibility of promoting Bollywood movies in Latin America. He visited India last year, and met with some movie producers and marketing companies to pursue his passion for  quality movies, with the objective of entertaining movie buffs.

Australia Plans To Ban foreigners From Buying Established Houses

Australia is planning to ban foreigners from buying established houses for the next two years. The move is part of the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese-led government's election pitch to tackle surging home prices. This is likely to affect a large number of Indians who go to Australia for higher education. Australia's Housing Minister Clare O'Neil announced that from April 1, 2025, foreign investors will be banned from buying established property until March 31, 2027. After the deadline, the restriction will be reviewed to determine whether it should be extended, she noted, adding that the tax office will be given extra funding to help enforce the ban.

Indian Expat’s Video On Why India Is More Convenient Sparks Debate

An Indian expat residing in Sweden has sparked a widespread discussion on social media by comparing the convenience of life in India to that in Sweden. Her video highlights the swift grocery delivery services available in India, contrasting sharply with her experiences in Sweden, where it takes over 10 minutes just to reach the nearest bus stop for shopping. "India is just more convenient!" she states, pointing out that these conveniences often go unmentioned in romanticised portrayals of life abroad. "A lot of these small things are not talked about enough, so you kind of romanticise this idea of living abroad just from what you see on social media, which is very misleading," she adds. Despite her observations, she clarifies, "Don’t get me wrong, I love living in Sweden." The video has ignited a vibrant conversation about the realities of living abroad vis-a-vis the perceived conveniences back home.

English Trifle

Trifle, a type of English dessert, is made by stacking layers of sponge cake, fruits, and whipped cream in a glass dish. The sponge cake is soaked in sherry before stacking into a Trifle. Different ingredients can be added to a Trifle, such as chocolate or fruit jelly.

Trifle finds a mention in English cookbooks from the 1500s. The oldest recipe for Trifle comes from Thomas Dawson's cookbook, "The Good Huswife's Jewel," written in 1585. It was made by cooking cream, ginger, rose water and sugar into a custard. Trifle was originally a dessert made by mixing fruit and cream, but now the word "Trifle" describes a dessert made with cake, cream and fruits. The modern Trifle was invented in the 1750s.

Indian Gulab Jamun

A ubiquitous dessert that you find at all Indian weddings, parties and festivals is Gulab Jamun. It is one of the most popular Indian desserts. It is an irresistibly delicious bite-sized donut dunked in a rose and cardamom-infused sugar syrup.

Gulab  Jamun is a 'rose water berry' sweet confectionery or dessert, which has its origins in the Indian subcontinent. This sweet or mithai is popular in India, Pakistan, Nepal, the Maldives, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It is also popular in countries with an Indian expat population.

Gulab Jamun is made mainly from milk solids, traditionally from khoya, which is milk reduced to the consistency of a soft dough. Modern recipes recommend dried or powdered milk instead of khoya. It is often garnished with dried nuts, such as almonds and cashews, to enhance flavour.

According to culinary historian Michael Krondl, 12th century Manasollasa mentions a recipe for fried fritter balls made of chenna cheese and rice flour and was soaked in cardamom-scented syrup but without the rosewater (gulab) syrup. The 13th century Arab dessert Luqmat al-Qadi is similar in appearance to Gulab Jamun, though it is made of entirely different batter. Perhaps, the only Persian connection is the common use of rosewater syrup. Gulab Jamun emerged in medieval India during the Mughal Empire, blending Persian influence with local influences.
