Medsurge's Salubrious Growth
Often, we find it challenging to make the right choices about health and wellness. Most of us have the knowledge of what is good for health, and yet sometimes we don't make the right choices. Even though we may act on what is required for our well-being and wellness, we may in due course slide back to our comfort zone. Wellness and well-being call for self-stewardship. Also, it takes dedication and efforts to take care of those we love.
Thanks to advances in medical science several previously incurable diseases can now be treated successfully. Today, medicines are easily accessible to people, which help promote their well-being. However, medicines come to markets from a variety of sources and manufacturers. Arguably, quality of health services is solely dependent on quality-assured medicines. Hence, ensuring the quality of medicine is significant to provide safe and effective healthcare and to curtail overall healthcare costs. Since inception in 2007, Medsurge Healthcare has been providing easy solutions to medicine-sourcing problems in Australian markets. It relentlessly operates to source, supply and distribute a comprehensive portfolio of essential medicines, including SAS, S19A, and Registered Products. It has been supplying to markets in Australia and New Zealand, among others, with superior alternatives, mitigating the effects of medicine shortages.
Humble Beginnings
Hailing from Bhopal, India, the young entrepreneurial couple had humble beginnings. Kam Phulwani, who has a family background of doctors, followed in their footsteps to become a pharmacist. On the other hand, Reet's entrepreneurial spirit was forged through her family background, with many family members engaged in business and trade.
Since Kam’s father and grandfather were doctors, from a young age he was exposed to intellectual talk on pharmacy, medicines, science, and healing right, besides philosophical ideals of charity and welfare of society. After completing his high school, he wished to study for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in India, but he was unable to do so due to the prohibitive course fee. However, unfazed by this development, he took a pharmacy degree and started his career as a qualified pharmacist in 1996.
On the other hand, Reet Phulwani has a progressive and modern-thinking family background, with many of her family members engaged in business. Thanks to her upbringing in a business family, she developed an entrepreneurial outlook early in life. Reet earned a degree in Bachelor of Information Systems from her hometown’s Bhopal University, and later studied Master’s of Information Systems. Kam and Reet were married at a young age. The couple fell in love due to their shared values and aspirations.
Kam and Reet equipped with pharmacy and IT qualifications respectively, travelled to Melbourne, Australia, in 2002. The couple's major objective for immigrating to Australia was studies. Reet wanted to take up her master's program in Monash University. All that the duo had then was two suitcases, $1000 in cash and a dream to make it big. Today, the Phulwanis own one of the top and fastest-growing pharma companies in Australia. They have been ranked among people of Indian descent who have achieved success abroad overcoming several daunting challenges.
Medsurge Healthcare
Kam and Reet Phulwani founded Medsurge Healthcare in 2007. The company is located in Melbourne, Australia, and its New Zealand operations began in 2011. Initially, the couple had to face challenges in setting up their business without any bank loans. But their determination and perseverance paid off. Kam noticed after his association with pharmacies for eight years that there were a number of medicines missing from pharmacies, as the big pharma companies did not want to bring them to Australia due to logistics and cost issues. He envisaged a business opportunity in bringing these niche and lifesaving medicines to Australia, which led him to set up a specialised pharma company. Today, Medsurge tops the list as a specialised pharma firm. It has a large number of employees to service 6,500 hospitals, supplying over 700 medicines.
Medsurge provides support to patients and healthcare professionals by simplifying and removing the barriers to accessing unapproved therapeutic goods globally. The Special Access Scheme (SAS) is governed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and used when there are no approved clinical trials within Australia, and a critical illness for which no proper treatment options are available locally.
Through the S19A-approved products Medsurge mitigates the effects of medicine shortages for patients and the healthcare system. It sources superior alternative medicines or treatments during medicine shortages or in times of short supply. These safe and effective products ensure every patient has access to medication of his or her choice when required.
Medsurge is committed to delivering market-leading TGA-registered pharmaceutical products to healthcare professionals and patients. This provides millions of Australians access to high-quality and clinically-tested medicines. It has made sourcing and supplying medicines easier, more efficient and highly reliable.
Medsurge has bagged several prestigious awards and significant nominations. In 2019, it won IABCA SME of the Year. IABCA or India Australia Business and Community Awards represents consistently growing relationship between the two nations. In 2017, it won Businesses of Tomorrow Westpac 200, which showcases exceptional businesses that make valuable contributions to industry and society through their achievements and vision for shaping the future.
Kam is a highly motivated and passionate person, who is hardworking, sincere and keen on acquiring knowledge in his field of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, due to his love for chemistry and formulation. Reet has been a passionate and ambition woman, who wanted to reach the pinnacle of success.
According to Kam and Reet, their enduring success is due to their loyal and dedicated team. Besides, hospitals and retail pharmacies require, along with top service, quality products, product knowledge and sourcing capabilities, which Medsurge has been able to provide all along with utmost dedication.
